Essential documentary: Listen to me Marlon

Marlon Brando in The Godfather

Listen To Me Marlon (15, 98 mins), Saturday November 7 and Sunday November 8, QFT Belfast

DON'T miss this acclaimed documentary about Marlon Brando playing at the QFT this weekend. Eschewing the standard 'talking heads' documentary format, director Stevan Riley has constructed Listen To Me Marlon from archive footage and hundreds of hours of previously unheard audio recordings.

Brando was seemingly obsessed with putting down his thoughts on tape, documenting childhood memories and multiple musings on the acting process, his performances good and bad (Brando was not fond of his Oscar-winning turn in On The Waterfront), the nature of fame and his psyche in general (several recordings stem from self-hypnosis sessions).

Thus, audiences can experience one of the great Method actors holding forth in his own words in a structured stream-of-conciousness style over visual references taken from his movies, interviews, news reels and archive photography.

A fascinating, mesmerising peek into the mind of a movie icon.
