1. When did you think about writing as a career and what were your first steps into it?
I don’t remember a time I wasn’t writing, so it’s not like it was a conscious decision. But in 2011 I moved to the country and started writing in earnest.
2. Best gigs you’ve been to?
65daysofstatic in Cyprus Avenue, Cork in 2010 was pretty special, but then, 65daysofstatic anywhere is pretty special. And Sarah Slean in Whelan’s in Dublin in 2013. It was a really intimate gig, Sarah and a gathering of the diehards, and very much worth the drive from Galway.
3. Fantasy wedding/birthday party band?
Murder By Death.
4. The record you’d take to a desert island?
Either Sundark and Riverlight by Patrick Wolf or the soundtrack to Final Fantasy VIII.
5. And the book?
I’ve never been bored by Wuthering Heights.
6. Top three films?
Irreversible, Living In Oblivion and The Wind Rises.
7. Worst film you’ve seen?
It has to be The Room, doesn’t it? Though those stupid Conjuring flicks come close.
8. Favourite authors?
Han Kang and Hubert Selby Jr.
9. Sport you most enjoy and top team?
Snooker, but to watch, not to play. I treat it like football, though, screaming at the telly. “Go on, Ronnie [O'Sullivan], all the way boy!”
10. Ideal holiday destination?
Italy if I’m being reasonable, Fiji if I’m being ludicrously optimistic.
11. Pet hate?
I’m a festering knot of hatred most of the time, so I have many. But I have an especially petty dislike of people who slobber or wear squeaky shoes.
12. What’s your favourite:
Dinner? Parmigiana.
Dessert? Anything with peanut butter.
Drink? A big Italian red, or an interesting craft beer, or a Mojito.
13. Who is your best friend and how do you know each other?
John, whom I know from being married to him.
14. Is there a God?
If there is, he has a really strange sense of humour.
