BUDGET airline easyJet has launched a new route to Venice from Belfast International Airport.

As first revealed by The Irish News in December, the airline has now confirmed it will offer twice weekly flights to the popular Italian tourist destination throughout the year, starting in June.

Venice becomes the second Italian destination added to the Belfast network in as many months, following the launch of a route to Naples. Before Christmas the destination was announced as one of three new routes alongside Valencia and the Isle of Man, as part of more than 400,000 seats for the summer season.

he new Venice will operate twice a week on A320 aircraft, which accommodate up to 186 passengers and tickets are now on sale.

EasyJet now offers 32 routes from Belfast and will add a sixth aircraft at its Northern Ireland base in June.

EasyJet's UK country manager, Ali Gayward said the new route is part of further growth plans in Belfast.

“We’re committed to expansion at Belfast Airport and the addition of another new route and additional aircraft will help us to deliver long term, sustainable growth, providing passengers with a greater range of destinations, all with low fares and great service.”

Managing director at Belfast International Airport, Graham Keddie added: "Statistics indicate that Italy is a massively underserved market from Belfast, but we are taking significant steps to address this issue, with the addition of Venice joining services to Milan, Naples and Verona. Year-round flights to Venice are certain to be popular for city breaks, cruise-ship connections and even ski in winter, not to mention opening up the potential for increased Italian tourism into Northern Ireland.”
