A huge community effort will see more than 1,000 food parcels distributed across west Belfast in the coming days.

Tullymore Community Centre in Andersonstown and Andersonstown Social Club have pulled together to make up 1,100 emergency parcels for those isolated due to Covid-19.

The communty centre, which usually runs a thriving programme for older people, had to stop the programme because of coronavirus.

Instead, volunteers now carry out daily telephone calls to around 220 elderly people to check how they are.

It was during these calls that the team identified needs among the most vulnerable.

With the help of £30,000 from Belfast City Council and the support from Andersonstown Social Club, the centre was able to source supplies and make up parcels which will be distributed across Belfast.

Director Jim Girvan said: "We identified every electoral ward and attached a community group to it.

"Every ward is getting 70-80 parcels.

"Andersonstown Social Club helped with negotiations with some big suppliers. Volunteers helped pack the bags. It was a collective effort.

"Some people are completely and utterly isolated. It's been a real community effort at its core - all the groups are working together on it. Without doubt, people are thankful for it".

Meanwhile, the Lenadoon Community Response Centre, based at the Glen Community Complex on the Suffolk Road in west Belfast, will deliver also 200 essential food packs to the elderly and vulnerable in their community this Friday.
