Electric Ireland HE Sigerson Cup round one: Queen’s 1-10 DCU 2-6

QUEEN’S grabbed another big first-round win as Luke Donnelly’s 1-1 in stoppage time took them to an ultimately dramatic victory over DCU.

A game that had muddled along for a long time sparked into life in the dying moments.

Eglish man Donnelly looked to have won it when he flashed home a left-footed strike in the first minute of stoppage time but Paddy Christie’s men came straight down the field and dropped the ball in for Meath’s Matthew Costello to punch home seconds later, levelling things up again at 1-9 to 2-6.

There was time for one more play and Patrick Brooks earned a controversial free that was then brought forward for dissent, with Donnelly tapping over the last kick of the game to earn Queen’s victory reminiscent of last year’s opening round win over rivals Ulster University.

It had been a low-scoring first half that DCU ended 1-2 to 0-2 in front thanks to a goal from Cork forward Conor Corbett.

Conor Deegan’s men now face the winners of Wednesday night’s game between SETU Carlow and TUS Midlands, with DCU playing the losers. Both games take place next Tuesday, January 16.
