WANT to learn about traditional skills or get the kids finding out about old-style street games or taking part in a craft workshop – all while doing a spot of shopping?
Belfast's Victoria Square has teamed up with National Museums Northern Ireland to showcase the north's rich historical heritage in one of the city's busiest shopping centres next month. Topics include transport, old Belfast, and a mini ‘Docks in the Dome’. Museum curators and specialist staff will host around 60 free workshops throughout August.
Highlights of National Museums Northern Ireland’s transport collections will be on display, including a replica Ferguson flyer airplane, while a Crossley racing car will also pay a visit.
“We love to use the centre every August to create an interactive experience as a pre ‘back to school’ day out," centre manager Michelle Greeves said.
Laura McCorry of National Museums Northern Ireland said: “This is a new and exciting type of partnership for us which will deliver a highly engaging, museum-inspired experience in Belfast city centre.
“Taking highlights from our collections out and about will allow even more people from Northern Ireland and beyond to take part in a wide range of activities that celebrate our traditional skills including weaving, lace making as well as children’s craft activities.
“We hope this museum experience not only delights visitors to Victoria Square but encourages new audiences to come and see our unique collections at our sites all year round.”
