Alexa can now make family announcements across the whole house

Amazon has unveiled its latest tool to help make Alexa part of the modern home – an announcement feature to tell everyone at home when dinner is ready.

Alexa Announcements enables users to make one-way announcements across all the Echo devices in a household, Amazon says, with consumers able to broadcast messages across the house using Alexa voice commands.

The new feature, which Amazon confirmed was rolling out to UK users from today, allows Echo owners to use commands such as “Alexa, announce that dinner is ready”, with a user’s voice then used to send out the message via every other compatible Echo device in the house.

Amazon said commands such as “Alexa, tell everyone…” will also work to make an announcement.

Multi-device features are becoming ever more prominent on Echo, with Amazon having introduced calling and messaging services, as well as its intercom-like Drop In feature, in recent months.

Amazon remains the market leader in the smart home speaker space, but continues to face pressure from Google and its Home line of products, as well as from Apple’s HomePod, which launched in the UK earlier this year.
