Currys PC World has launched a full shopping app for the first time ahead of Black Friday and the busy Christmas shopping period.
Users will be able to find items and make purchases directly through the app, which has been released on both Android and Apple’s iOS.
The retailer, which is part of Dixons Carphone, said the app would also soon include an augmented reality tool which will allow users to place a virtual version of an item in their home before deciding to buy it.
The firm said the launch was part of a multimillion-pound investment being made in its eCommerce systems.
The new app supports the ability to scan product barcodes to find out details on it, as well as check live stock levels.
It will also offer a “secure login” using biometrics such as fingerprint or facial recognition to launch.
The augmented reality tool will be introduced in a future update, the firm said, as will the ability to pay in-app using Google or Apple Pay, tracking delivery and manage repairs, trade-ins and upgrades.
The app roll-out comes ahead of Black Friday on November 29, when shoppers are forecast to spend £2.53 billion.
That figure – from a recent report by the Centre for Retail Research for VoucherCodes.co.uk – is 3.4% more than last year, and £8.57 billion over four days including Cyber Monday.
Spending in the UK is predicted to be the highest in Europe – 29% higher than second-highest Germany and more than Italy, Spain, Belgium and the Netherlands combined.
Stuart Ramage, eCommerce director at Dixons Carphone, said: “We want to be with our customers throughout the lifetime of their products and throughout their life.
“Our app is part of this journey, creating a seamless end-to-end experience. This includes features to help them discover, choose, afford and enjoy the latest amazing tech right through to advice on how to repair, trade in and upgrade products.”
