NORTHERN Ireland's biggest public service union NIPSA has voted Alison Millar as its new general secretary.
Ms Millar received 56 per cent of the votes cast and will take up the post in January.
The election came after Brian Campfield, who has held the position since early 2010, announced his retirement.
Ms Millar is currently the union’s deputy general secretary and has been employed by NIPSA since 1978.
Following the announcement of the ballot Ms Millar said she was "honoured to have the opportunity to serve NIPSA members as their general secretary".
"I will do my utmost to ensure NIPSA is a strong, independent and effective trade union championing the right of workers in the public service, community and voluntary sector and a growing number in the private sector," she said.
"In light of the current onslaught against public services and the negative impact on our community in Northern Ireland, a united trade union movement is essential.”
Mr Campfield said: "The vote for Alison Millar reflects the high regard and confidence of NIPSA members in her commitment and ability to lead the union in these difficult times.
"I know she will be up to the challenge and will always put the interests of members first."
