Banbridge-based property development company Lotus Homes is proposing a multi-million pound housing scheme in Newry.

It has lodged a pre-application notice with Newry, Mourne and Down District Council for the development at Doran’s Hill in the city.

Phase one will consist of 24 units to get the project started, but the site plan will extend to 200 houses.

Lotus has made slight amendments to a proposal submitted by the previous owners and previously approved.

Paul O’Rourke from Lotus Homes said: “We hope that, with a positive response from Planning Service to the amendments proposed, we will be on site for phase one early 2025.

“We believe it will take around five years to complete the development, which includes a new spine route through the site which will replace part of Watson’s Road, offering significant improvements in road safety.”

“We’re delighted to be bringing these much-needed quality affordable homes to the Newry area. We recently completed a development at Hillcrest Village in Bessbrook, which has proved extremely popular with the local community.”

He added: “We know that comprehensive community engagement in relation to this site has taken place over the years, and we intend to continue with this.

“We are hosting a community engagement session in October as part of the process, and we look forward to speaking to local residents and representatives about the opportunity this presents for the area.”

Lotus Homes, part of the group behind the Junction and Boulevard retail parks, has also scheme in the offing at Ballywillan Road in Portrush, just a two-minute drive from Portrush Golf Club, which hosts The Open in 2025, and at Ballygowan Road in Comber

Lotus Property has launched a bid to develop 105 social housing units on the Ormeau Road on the site of UTV’s former headquarters.
