A 76-year-old man from Ireland has died while swimming at a beach in Spain.

The man, who has not been named, died on Monday following an incident at Cala Capitan on the Orihuela coast in the southeast of the country.

It was reported that the man was pulled unconscious from the water after another person saw him in difficulty.

A rescue team attempted to resuscitate him, but he was pronounced dead.

English language news site The Leader reported an autopsy is to take place.

The tragedy follows the death of a 72-year-old Irish man who is understood to have drowned last week while in the sea at Costa Dorada in the Catalonia region.
