OSCAR-WINNER Oorlagh George has begun filming her first feature-length drama in Co Down.

Ms George, who won an Oscar for her short film The Shore, along with her father Terry George, is filming her directorial debut, Stranger with a Camera, in the village of Killough.

The drama tells the story of Gráinne, an American teenager who finds herself stranded in Northern Ireland after her father is arrested over a murder linked to the IRA 17 years earlier.

During the film, Gráinne works with her cousin to try and find out the family's secrets.

Murals have been painted in the village, setting the fictional scene, including a republican one showing a masked gunman with the words 'Welcome to Loughkillen...We aim to be free.'

The film stars Ellie Bamber, who was a lead in BBC's Les Misérables and The Trial of Christine Keeler, as Gráinne.

Galway-born Owen McDonnell, who previously starred in Killing Eve, will also star in the drama.

Ms George, who was born in Belfast and raised in New York, said the film was "a story about the power of empathy among young people in Northern Ireland, as they try to make sense of a history shrouded in secrets and transcend the boundaries and burdens they've inherited".

"Gráinne grows up with a trauma that doesn't have a story. This film is her fight to understand the events that shaped her life, in order to move on."

In 2012, Ms George and her father won the Best Live Action Short Oscar for The Shore.

Starring Ciarán Hinds, Conleth Hill, Kerry Condon and Maggie Cronin, the film tells the story of a man who emigrated to America during the Troubles but later decides to bring his daughter home to meet his childhood friends.
