And so to Caprice Bourret. Remember her? Of course you do. She was an American model who morphed into a singer and then businesswoman with a lingerie range. She’s still an entrepreneur with a lingerie business and has since expanded into homeware.

At the height of her modelling career Caprice charged £15,000 for a 45-minute appearance and if the event overran she’d ask for an additional £5,000.

Can you imagine what your boss would say if you suggested £5k compensation for overtime. Other than “jog on”?

Caprice has been chatting to the Sunday Telegraph and displaying a refreshing, unabashed, attitude to being filthy rich.

“I am the first to tell you that I love money. I am loud and proud on this. I am very American. I have worked hard and am very proud to be where I am today.”

It was her mother who drilled into her that financial independence provides options, particularly for woman.

Asked if there was ever a time in her life when she worried about paying the bills Caprice gave a resounding yes.

“When I first started out in modelling in the States, I was living on bagels and pad thai, as that was all I could afford. I think going through something like that builds character and makes you hungrier for success.”

Or, at least, hungrier for different food types?

Caprice built an empire from scratch and says her modelling days “were a rollercoaster” which saw her making millions one year and “not so much” the next. Poor pet.

“I lived life to the fullest, trust me. Money was flowing in. If I was booked for a 45-minute appearance for £15,000, it would be an extra £5,000 if the time overran. A 10?day shoot for £24,000 was pretty normal.

“I turned down an offer of £50,000 just to turn up at someone’s party. In retrospect it was quite easy money compared to the actual job of running a retail business.”

The best anecdote in the interview is a cautionary tale about capricious currencies.

“I was very naive about exchange rates,” she explained. “I was doing exchanges on the spot and I lost so much money in a short space of time – £1.6million, which really hurt.”

Caprice must have been exchanging suitcases full of cash at the airport foreign currency desk as her flight was being called; that’s the only way Sleb Safari can make sense of it.

A hard lesson to learn Caprice but at least you’ve millions more in the bank to keep you warm in your old age. Sleb Safari wishes you continued success in 2019 and may you never have to return to bagels and pad thai but continue to feast on caviar and Krug for many more years to come.

Karl Lagerfeld prefers spending time with Choupette to going online

Karl Lagerfeld
Karl Lagerfeld

Karl Lagerfeld is a man with a very distinctive look. Not as distinctive as Ronald McDonald, but equally consistent.

He also has strong opinions on a great many things, thus gives great quotes.

Speaking recently to The Cut, Karl shared his views on social media, the internet and, as is often the case, his own importance to the planet.

Karl says he is too famous to move freely as a citizen of this grubby world but continues to have his finger on the pulse.

“Today the world comes to you. I read every magazine and everything. There are very few people as informed as I am.”

And what of smartphones Karl? Do you idle away hours scrolling mindlessly?

“No, no. I think it’s great, but I have assistants who inform me [about] what I have not seen. Personally, I have no time. I don’t do internet, I don’t do Facebook. I have to sketch, I have to play with Choupette, I have to sleep. The day is too short for that.”

So there you have it peasants, you should be playing with your own cat and not watching videos of someone else playing with their cat.

Sister Act: The Reboot

Sister Act is about to get Disney-fied. The conglomerate wants to give the irrepressible Sister Mary Clarence another outing but the only problem is that Whoopie Goldberg won't be back in the habit.

Sleb Safari is unsure how it feels about the whole thing.

Whoopie says after much discussion Disney decided "they are going to go in a different direction with Sister Act... So it won’t be Sister Act 3 it will be a brand new rendition of Sister Act”.

And Whoopie is likely to have a cameo in the film and nothing else. Sleb Safari has changed its mind, it knows exactly how it feels about the whole thing.
