STEVEN Spielberg’s 1977 sci-fi epic returns to cinemas this weekend to mark its 40th anniversary with a new 4K digital print of his preferred 1998 ‘Special Edition' cut.
The film stars Richard Dreyfuss as Roy Neary, an e?ectrical worker who encounters a UFO while investigating a large-scale power outage, then becomes obsessed with a distinctive desert landmark for reasons he can't quite explain.
As it turns out, Roy’s not the only one who can't get the ominous Devil's Tower out of his head – though he might be alone in sculpting it out of mash.
Audiences will also be treated to a short feature about the making of the iconic film, which includes an all new interview with Steven Spielberg.
“The movie that I made was not intended to be a science-fiction movie,” insists Spielberg.
“I really believed that there was something up there. I still believe we’re not alone in the universe.”
Let’s just hope that if any extra terrestrials do treat us to a close encounter, they're just as friendly as the ones in his films.
