Arts Q&A: Culture Night Belfast's Gawain Morrison on the Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Doors, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy and the All Blacks

Jenny Lee puts performers and artists on the spot about what really matters to them. This week, media producer and events organiser Gawain Morrison

1. When did you think about a career in the arts and what were your first steps into it?

In the late 1990s, I was DJing and running parties. I started a weekly club night called Evolution with a bunch of mates, and it ended up running for five years. It was a mix of music styles over multiple floors in a venue called Vicos. We had incredible music and DJing skills from local and international DJs. As a result of being so immersed in dance music, it led us to produce our own music and starting a record label, which then led us to produce our own music videos.

2. Best gigs you've been to?

The top slot goes to Slane when Queens of the Stone Age, Foo Fighters and the Red Hot Chili Peppers played back to back. The river mist came up behind the stage whilst the Chilis were playing which made it even more mystical and memorable. Other favourites include Primal Scream at Féile playing Screamadelica live and Ken Ishii played our club night in Belfast. We were so excited as it was his first time coming to Ireland.

3. Fantasy wedding/birthday party band?

The Doors or Bob Marley and the Wailers.

4. The record you would take to a desert island?

LA Woman by The Doors. They are the backing tracks to me growing up, hanging out with my mates and generally having a whole lot of fun.

5. And the book you would take to a desert island?

Douglas Adams's The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy - the 42nd Anniversary Edition.

6. Top three films?

The Big Lebowski, because it's a stroke of understated comedy genius by the Coen Brothers. Pi by Darren Aronofsky, because it was low budget film-making done perfectly. It has a fantastic story, a well-crafted script, is tight on locations, has beautiful style, and clever and innovative camera work. Loved it - it gave me the inspiration to get into film-making. And Monsters University, because it reminds me of my kids - and what's not to love about it?

7. Worst film you've seen?

The Gingerdead Man - so bad it was almost good... almost.

8. Favourite authors?

Douglas Adams, Isaac Asimov and Jon Ronson.

9. Sports you most enjoy and your top teams?

I enjoy running and cycling, but don't get to do either as much as I used to. I love watching rugby and obviously support Ireland, but if you're a rugby fan the All Blacks always get a special seat at the table because of how amazing it can be to watch them play.

10. Ideal holiday destination?

Anywhere that I haven't been before. I really enjoy creating new memories.

11. Pet hates?

Selfishness in all its forms - and there are plenty of those forms about the place.

12. What's your favourite:

Dinner? Surf and turf.

Dessert? Italian ice cream.

Drink? Mojito.

13. Who is your best friend and how do you know each other?

My beautiful lady Kat McLean, and as corny as it sounds we saw each other across a club as people parted on the dance floor.

14. Is there a God?

If there is, he's having a laugh.

Gawain Morrison is the Creative Lead for this year's Belfast Culture Night which is happening in Writer's Square from September 17-19. He and his team have developed The Ogham Grove immersive sculpture and digital trail, which is inspired by the ancient Celtic Ogham Tree Alphabet.
