IN THE punk era, bands always used to complain about their records turning out weedy and ineffectual compared to their live sound.
Now, Derry veterans The Undertones have decided to revamp one of their signature singles to better resemble the pounding pop punk blitzkrieg that's been inspiring gig goers to pogo for the past 40 years.
Originally released in 1979, Get Over You instantly became one of the band's signature songs.
However, its nice backing vocals and rather 'clean' sound made it feel a bit tame in the wake of their more rambunctious debut, Teenage Kicks.
Happily, the band have decided to remix the song as part of their ongoing 40th anniversary celebrations – and who better to do the honours than Kevin 'guitar holocaust' Shields of shoegaze godheads My Bloody Valentine?
Wisely, Kev hasn't attempted to MBV-ise proceedings: instead, he's simply ditched the backing vox, distorted the guitars and generally cranked the volume to a more appropriately cacophonous level.
He's also made it about 20 seconds longer by dispensing with the original's fade-out ending and allowing the band to milk that killer chorus a few more times.
Revisionism is generally considered sacrilege in punk circles, but I can't see anyone getting too upset in this case when the results sound so 'right'.
The remixed Get Over You will be released as a 7-inch on October 7 as part of an Undertones vinyl reissue programme along with their self-titled debut LP and the follow-up, Hypnotised.
