Profits dip at Cooneen clothing firm

TYRONE textiles firm Cooneen Group which makes clothing as diverse as military gear and children's pyjamas has posted a 12.6 per cent drop in profits to £5.7 million.

The group, owned by millionaire John B McGuckian, saw revenue dip slightly to £59.1m for the 12 months to November 28 2014.

The company, which is registered in Ballymena, but is headquartered in Fivemiletown, runs a number of subsidiaries including Cooneen Defence, Cooneen Protection and Cooneen at Work.

The firm, recently rebranded under its pyjamas banner Cooneen By Design, makes a range of heavy duty garments for use in the work place.

That includes millions of items of clothing for military personnel across the world.

Other products include ballistic resistant body armour, shields and helmets for law enforcement agencies and emergency services.

During the year, the company grew staff numbers by four to 149 which pushed the wage bill up to £5.1m.

It has become the leading supplier of character-based children's pyjamas - featuring the likes of Peppa Pig and Scooby Doo - for retailers across the UK and also supplies into Europe.

John B McGuckian, aged 75 is also chairman of ferrys company Irish Continental Group and is a former chairman of UTV Media.

Other former appointments include as chairman of the International Fund for Ireland and the Industrial Development Board (IDB).
