ELECTRICITY and gas price are expected to fall in the spring with a review of tariffs announced by the industry watchdog.

Any changes should be known next month with the new tariffs to come into effect in April.

The review relates to Power NI domestic and small business electricity customers.

It will also look at household and small firms' gas tariffs for SSE Airtricity in the greater Belfast area and Firmus Energy in the so-called 'ten towns' region.

Although there is no indication from any supplier as to the expected outcome, an industry insider said "good news" was anticipated.

Kerstie Forsyth, head of marketing and communications at Power NI said: “We are pleased to confirm that we are currently reviewing our electricity prices. This follows on from our price cut of over 9 per cent in April last year.

“We initiated a review of our prices before Christmas and will be making an announcement in the coming weeks. As our prices are agreed with the Utility Regulator, Power NI customers can be confident that they will always pay a fair price.”

A spokesman for SSE Airtricity said it had commenced a review of gas prices and any variation in price would come into play from April.

The Utility Regulator said it regulates the firms to "continuously monitor the components that make up their regulated electricity and gas tariffs and then approve any resulting tariff change when necessary".

"A formal review has now commenced of regulated tariffs. It is expected that the reviews will conclude in February to allow any changes to electricity and gas bills to take effect from 1 April 2016," it added.

Although the review only relates to those tariffs that are regulated, it is common for firm's competitors to follow suit with changes.

Meanwhile, a 1.3 per cent reduction in SSE Airtricity's electricity prices announced last month is due to come into effect on Monday.
