Northern Ireland firms announce plans for 100 new jobs

MORE than a hundred new jobs have been announced to continue a bumper week for the north's employment market.

American software firm Cayan said it would create 50 new positions in a £3 million investment at its new Belfast headquarters.

Meanwhile, more than 50 jobs are planned at various firms across the Causeway Coast and Glens area, enterprise minister Jonathan Bell has said.

It brings to well over 200 the number of new jobs announced in Northern Ireland the week.

It is further good news for those out of work and comes as another 500 leave the north's dole queues.

The announcement by Cayan came as it prepared to open its new science-fiction themed base at City Quays 1 in Belfast Harbour.

The Boston headquartered company - previously known as Merchant Warehouse - is creating roles in two divisions, customer support and software engineering.

The firm arrived in Northern Ireland in 2013 and already employs almost 140 people.

The business provides point of sale payment platforms for some of the world's leading brands such as Puma and Harley Davidson.

The new offices include wi-fi stations and and even an XBox room, fitted out with gaming chairs.

Bronagh Major, HR manager at the firm, which is holding a recruitment evening next Tuesday, said: “Cayan’s entire approach is different as we hire based on attitude and approach, and then train and support our people to help them progress and excel.

“It’s less about qualifications and more about approach and engagement – so anyone who has worked in a busy retail or service-based environment, such as a coffee shop, bar or restaurant, could have the initiative and skills which would make them excel at Cayan."

Meanwhile, enterprise minister Jonathan Bell announced 51 new positions at various businesses in the Causeway Coast and Glens council area.

They include 15 jobs at P&L Electrics in Limavady which is investing £930,000 in grow its business in the commercial and industrial sectors.

Also in Limavady, Seating Matters is investing £447,000 to grow exports and create 10 jobs while Limavady Roller Doors is creating five jobs with a £494,000 investment and RCDS (Reinforced Concrete Detailing Services) is adding three jobs with a £157,000 investment.

Kilrea-based Carnroe Supplies is spending £618,000 to create nine jobs.

In Coleraine, Worldwide IPGenie is investing £114,0 to grow sales in external markets and has created two jobs while Annie's Traditional Food is adding seven jobs with a £319,500 investment.

Mr Bell said the combined salaries of all the new roles would add £1m to the economy.

"This substantial investment of £3m across seven local businesses is testament to the commitment and drive of these companies to prosper and grow and will enhance their overall competitiveness in an ever challenging marketplace," he said.
