THE Citigroup is set to take its Northern Ireland workforce beyond 4,000 people by adding another 400 new roles according to reports.

Already the north’s largest financial services employer, Citi announced plans in February 2022 to add 300 new staff across its four Belfast sites.

But James Bardrick, head of Citi UK, has told Bloomberg that the Wall Street giant has already grown to 3,700 staff in Belfast, with plans to add another 400.

It means Citi’s workforce in the north has grown tenfold since it started out in 2005 with 375 staff.

Mr Bardrick said recruitment is ongoing at all levels.

The financial services group’s recruitment website had 441 positions listed in Belfast on Tuesday.

The surge in numbers means it’s Northern Ireland workforce will exceed 4,000 in the coming months.

“Whether it’s compliance, legal HR, markets support functions or technology, these activities are all wanting more people in Belfast,” said Mr Bardrick.

“There’s nothing to suggest that the organic rates of growth that we’ve seen recently won’t continue.”

Citi has used the Gateway building in Belfast's Titanic Quarter as its main base in Northern Ireland since 2009. It later bought the office complex in 2019 for around £34m.

Meanwhile the Financial Times has reported Citigroup is close to signed a €100 million deal for a new office site in the centre of Dublin to boost the scale of its European headquarters in the aftermath of Brexit.

According to the FT report, the financial services giant is in the final stages of finalising the deal for a 300,000 sq ft office space in the Dublin Docklands, which is already home to the headquarters Google, Amazon and Meta.

The new office is expected to cost about another €200mn on top of the purchase price of the land.

Citi’s current Dublin base is currently 230,000 sq ft.
