POPULAR Irish burger chain Bunsen has confirmed it will open its second restaurant in Belfast.

Founded by cousins Tom and Finn Gleeson in 2013 after returning to Ireland from New York, Bunsen opened in Belfast’s Cathedral Quarter during 2017.

The restaurant chain, known for its minimalistic menu, now has nine outlets across the Republic.

The Gleesons said the popularity of its Hill Street venue has led to its expansion into south Belfast.

The Bunsen method involves grinding black Aberdeen Angus beef in house every day.

The new restaurant will open at 78-80 Botanic Avenue on Friday (October 20), creating 13 hospitality jobs.

The unit, formerly associated with Carlito's, has been vacant for several years.

The property has been restored by Marcon, with the design by LUCA Architecture of Dublin.

It will bring its network of restaurants across the island to 11.

“We are delighted to be opening our second restaurant in Belfast this year,” said Tom Gleeson.

“The high demand for Bunsen in Belfast is something we never expected, so opening a second restaurant was a no brainer.

Meanwhile, plans for a new hotel next door to Bunsen's Hill Street restaurant have been approved by Belfast City Council.

Ducales, which owns St Anne's Square, has secured permission its redrafted bid for a 20-bed hotel on Hill Street.

The plans include a new street level bar and restaurant.
