FAST growing composites group Jans has revealed plans to develop a huge 240,000 sq ft manufacturing facility next to Lidl’s Nutts Corner headquarters in Co Antrim.

Jans Composites was set up in October 2019 after Lisburn investor Peter Drayne acquired the Wright Group’s mouldings and metal fabrication division out of administration.

It currently operates from a facility at Caulside Drive in Antrim, where it manufactures modular buildings and commercial vehicles.

The group is also involved in the leasing of commercial vehicles.

Earlier this year Jans secured planning approval to build a new £10 million factory at its Antrim site, creating 150 jobs.

But the group has now notified Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council of its intention to develop a 25-acre brownfield site eight miles away, immediately south of Lidl’s Northern Ireland distribution hub at Nutts Corner.

A pre-planning application of notice (PAN) was lodged with the council’s planning department in recent days.

It proposes the construction of a ‘class 3 general industrial unit’ with ancillary offices, parking and servicing areas, and landscaping.

It’s anticipated the facility will span around 22,500 sqm (242,200 sq ft).

Industry monitor Construction Information Services Ireland estimates the project could be worth in the region of £30 million.

More details of the manufacturing group’s plans are due to be presented during an event at Crumlin Community Hub on January 16 2024.

The latest accounts published by the group’s parent entity, Jans Holding, reveal its turnover increased by 254% to £13.5m in the year to December 2022.

The group’s workforce also expanded to 195 in that period, with staff costs almost doubling from £2.5m to £4.8m.

The costs incurred by the company during the period resulted in a pre-tax loss of £3.3m.
