A PRINCIPAL has joked with parents that their children are unlikely to ever miss another day of school.

Raymond Hunter, head of John Paul II PS in west Belfast, wrote to inform parents his school was closed until further notice.

He said only a small number of parents had asked for childcare support while many said they did not want to expose their sons and daughters to greater risk by sending them to school.

In his letter, he also explained that several staff were unavailable, therefore opening was too great a risk.

Mr Hunter said the school would provide online support.

"Hopefully this will end in the not too distant future," Mr Hunter wrote.

"We all look forward to singing at the first assembly when we all get back to school.

"I'm fairly confident that after spending so much time with your children at home, it's most unlikely that your child will ever miss another day off school for the rest of their primary school days."
