The PSNI was forced to close part of a Co Armagh station last week after a Covid-19 scare.

A spokeswoman said police “became aware of a potential issue with an individual” who had visited the enquiry office at Lurgan station on March 25.

The spokeswoman confirmed that the enquiry office “was closed for a short period of time to allow for a deep clean to be carried out and ensure that we as, as an employer and public service, followed all advice issued by the Chief Medical Officer, Department of Health and Public Health Agency”.

Details of the scare came to light after several people who sign on at the station as part of their bail conditions became aware of an issue.

Earlier this week PSNI chief constable Simon Byrne confirmed that two officers have contracted the virus.

Solicitor Gavin Booth, of Phoenix Law, who represents several republicans who have to sign at the station as part of their bail conditions, has now written to authorities.

“We feel there is a risk to our clients by continuing to make members of the public attend police stations where it is not deemed necessary,”he said.

The PSNI spokeswoman said: “Court bail conditions must be obeyed unless an appropriate application for variation is granted.

“A procedure has been implemented so that persons that continue to attend enquiry offices to sign bail do not have to physically sign.”

She added that social distancing measures are in place.
