The first trailer for The Fantastic Four: First Steps has teased that the movie about the Marvel superhero team will be set in a retro futuristic world.
The latest Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) movie sees The Mandalorian star Pedro Pascal reunite with his Gladiator II co-star Joseph Quinn, an English actor best known for Netflix hit Stranger Things, while English actress and Napoleon star Vanessa Kirby, and The Bear actor Ebon Moss-Bachrach join them in the superpowered line-up.
The first teaser sees Pascal as Reed Richards/the stretchy genius Mister Fantastic and Kirby as Sue Storm/Invisible Woman welcome a person to their base and home, The Baxter Building – a skyscraper that features a 1960s-style kitchen and living room design.
Pascal then says: “We make a point to do family dinner every week, Sunday at seven on the dot, no matter what, we’re all here.”
It also sees their origins explored, from when the astronauts were gifted special powers from cosmic radiation after going into space, and Moss-Bachrach as the rocky Ben Grimm/The Thing trying not to be seen in public, and interact with their robot Humanoid Experimental Robot, B-Type (Herbie).
The trailer later sees Pascal express concerns about “going up the first time” into space, and their gifts such as Johnny Storm/The Human Torch (Quinn) being able to go on fire, and Ben being rock-covered, while in bed with his partner Sue.
Sue responds, saying: “Ben has always been a rock, Johnny is Johnny, and I’m right here, whatever life throws at we’ll face it together, as a family.”
The final moments of the clip introduce evil giant space creature Galactus, who eats planets, and is played by British actor and Game Of Thrones star Ralph Ineson, as well as two-time Oscar nominated actor John Malkovich in an undisclosed role as a bearded man.
Kirby recently starred as Josephine in Sir Ridley Scott’s Napoleon, and is known for her Oscar-nominated role in the film Pieces Of A Woman, and her Bafta-winning portrayal as Princess Margaret, Countess of Snowdon in Netflix royal drama The Crown.
Chilean-American actor Pascal has played grumpy survivor Joel Miller in dystopian series The Last Of Us, and the title character The Mandalorian in the Disney+ Star Wars show about a bounty hunter that saves a green child called Grogu.
A previous Fantastic Four film came out in 1994, followed by a reboot in 2005 starring Welsh actor Ioan Gruffudd, Jessica Alba, Chris Evans and Michael Chiklis.
They all returned in 2007 for Fantastic Four: Rise Of The Silver Surfer, in which they learned they were not the only superpowered beings in the universe.
In 2015, Miles Teller, Kate Mara, Michael B Jordan and Jamie Bell starred in another Fantastic Four movie, and animated TV series based on the comics have aired throughout the years.
The new film will be in cinemas on July 25, according to Marvel Studios.
