Mexican actress Salma Hayek telling fellow Hollywood star Selena Gomez to have “her moment” at the Golden Globes is among the stand-out moments on the red carpet this year.

Gomez, whose family are from Mexico, is up for best supporting actress in a motion picture against her Emilia Perez co-star Zoe Saldana at the event, which is being held at the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles on Sunday.

Hayek was about to join Variety magazine for an interview on the red carpet, but saw Gomez and said: “I want Selena to have her moment.”

Gomez than broke down in tears, and said: “I haven’t taken any pictures yet, so it’s actually the sweetest thing ever, I love her. I look up to her, my dad’s crush is her.”

She is also up against British star Felicity Jones for her role in The Brutalist, Isabella Rossellini for Conclave, Margaret Qualley for The Substance and pop heavyweight Ariana Grande – whose nomination for Wicked marked her first – in the film actress category.

The US actress was then interrupted by her Only Murders In The Building co-stars Martin Short and Steve Martin, who play a trio who solve murders after becoming obsessed with true crime podcasts.

For the series, Gomez is also up for a best performance Golden Globe by an actress in a TV musical or comedy, against Kristen Bell for Netflix romantic comedy hit Nobody Wants This, about a rabbi and a podcast host who fall in love, and British actress Ayo Edebiri for kitchen-set high tension drama The Bear.

Martin told Variety: “How about this gal (Selena)? I don’t know. Is that OK to say? You’re nominated for this outstanding movie that you went to Paris to shoot and learn Spanish lines, and it’s just amazing.”

Gomez was also seen holding hands with music producer Benny Blanco on the red carpet, who she got engaged to last year.

Also reuniting on the red carpet at the Golden Globes were musical Moulin Rouge! stars Nicole Kidman and Scottish actor Ewan McGregor, and Ask The Dust co-stars Hayek and Irish actor Colin Farrell.

Kidman praised Esther McGregor, McGregor’s daughter who stars in thriller Babygirl with her. Babygirl sees Kidman nominated for best actress in a drama film.

McGregor said: “She’s really wonderful in it … she has a couple of moments in it that really just my eyes opened wide and I was like, ‘Oh my gosh, she’s really got it’. So I’m really proud.”

They both starred as love interests in the musical directed by Baz Luhrmann, and which received eight Academy Award nominations, winning two gongs in 2002 and later being adapted for the stage.

Farrell, who transformed into a Batman villain for the HBO series Penguin, was giving Hayek advice on wearing prosthetics as he was interviewed by Variety.

He said: “The thing is be cautious about taking it off at the end of the day, because you want to be in a rush and you want to get out of there. Take your time, tell them to slow down.

“I would be ripping pieces off and tell them to hurry along and stuff, but just get them to take their time when they’re taking the prosthetics off, that will save your skin.”

Farrell is up against Richard Gadd for dark comedy Baby Reindeer, McGregor for Russian-set historical comedy A Gentleman In Moscow, and Irish actor Andrew Scott for a remake of Ripley on Netflix for best performance by a male actor in a limited or anthology series or TV film.

American actress Emma Stone also surprised the red carpet with a pixie cut, a departure from her usual longer hairstyle, which she sported alongside a sparkly upper ear and a red dress.

The 82nd Golden Globes is presented by American comedian and actress Nikki Glaser – the first woman to solo host the ceremony.
