Victoria Beckham has said she is “so excited” to host a range of contemporary artworks at her designer store as part of a new collaboration with Sotheby’s.
The Spice Girl turned fashion designer selected 11 pieces by Yoshitomo Nara, George Condo, Keith Haring, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Joan Mitchell, Gerhard Richter, Yves Klein and Francis Bacon to be staged in her London shop for a temporary exhibition from Thursday to Monday.
Beckham, 50, has previously turned exhibition curator when she partnered with the auction house to welcome Old Master paintings in 2018.
In an Instagram post, Beckham said: “I’m so excited to partner with @Sothebys again on an incredible curation of contemporary art at my flagship London store.
“Art has always been a source of inspiration and over the years, I’ve so enjoyed learning and educating myself.
“It has the power to spark ideas, evoke emotion and speak to the world around us.”
The artworks will be displayed ahead of going up for sale at Sotheby’s upcoming contemporary auctions in New York and London.
In 2018, the fashion designer displayed portraits at her London store from artists including Sir Peter Paul Rubens and Lucas Cranach the Elder ahead of Sotheby’s Old Master Paintings sale.
She also backed the auction house’s The Female Triumphant sale in 2019, which platformed “fearless and groundbreaking” female artists from the 16th to the 19th centuries.
Beckham told the PA news agency at the time: “I definitely identify with women succeeding in something against the odds.
“I certainly entered the fashion arena surrounded by people’s preconceptions, and I would say that I needed a strength of mind to pursue my passion.
“These artists defied the norm of their time and I think that is what is truly fascinating about them – as well as how incredible their work is.”
The new exhibition will be on display at 36 Dover Street in London from February 6-10.
