THE Armagh County Convention will be held in Newry for the first time this year with Thomas Davis Corrinshego hosting over 100 delegates in their spacious clubrooms on Thursday night.

The convention will see Sarsfields clubman Sean McAlinden take over from outgoing Paul McArdle as county chairman. Middletown clubman McArdle steps down having undoubtedly left the county in good health. During his term he ushered in the start of development work at Armagh’s Centre of Excellence in Portadown and Armagh won the Sam Maguire. McArdle will now take up the role of Central Council Delegate.

Hosting the county convention in the traditional home of Down GAA is a milestone for Armagh and for the Corrinshego club and a reward for the development work over the last decade which has transformed the club’s facilities.

“We’re delighted that the county board and management committee have chosen us, as a Newry club, to host the convention in a very historic year for Armagh,” said club secretary David O’Brien.

“For us, from where we came from in the old tin hut 15 years ago, to host the county convention is a massive thing.

“It cements Newry as a part of Armagh and we hope that the ever-growing population of the town can be tapped into. There is a population in excess of 20,000 in west Newry (the Armagh part of the town) and we want to let them know that there is an Armagh presence in the town.

“We want to thank Paul McArdle, who is stepping down, for all his hard work and we wish Sean McAlinden the best. Hopefully he will be as successful as the previous chairman.”
