Queen's and St Mary's UC are due to meet at Davitts GAA club in west Belfast on Sunday at 2pm.

The Electric Ireland Sigerson Cup opening round fixture between St Mary’s and Queen’s University has been pushed back for a second time as wintery conditions linger.

The match had originally been fixed for 8 January and then moved to 2pm today, but safety concerns in the icy conditions means the match is refixed for Davitt’s GAC in West Belfast at 2pm on Sunday.

With the derby being dubbed the ‘Bel Clasico’, Queen’s manager Conor Deegan had expressed his satisfaction when the draw was made in November:

“We have played each other recently, we would know each other well, generally there would be a lot of respect between the two colleges”, the former Down star said.

“It will be interesting — they will have no fear of us, and we have to reciprocate that. They are happy with the draw, we’re happy with the draw, we don’t have to travel too far, and it will be the new ‘Bel Clasico’ as the players are calling it.”

Ulster University made a winning start to their defence of the cup on Wednesday, as Danny Magill and Conor Cush combined for 0-9 against ATU Sligo.

Five other Sigerson fixtures do go ahead tonight, with TUS Midlands v Maynooth the sole match unfolding tomorrow.
