Clann Eireann v Madden; St Peter’s v Maghery

THE Armagh senior championship’s ‘Group of death’ comes to the boil on Friday evening with 2021 champions Clann Eireann, Maghery (2020 champions) and Madden (recent semi-finalists) all in with a chance of top spot.

The winners of the fourth-team group progress to the quarter-finals while second and third head for the preliminary round where they will play a third-placed team or the runners-up from another group respectively. The bottom side is eliminated.

Madden currently top the group and are assured of progression after two wins out of two thanks to a last-gasp victory over Maghery in their opener which was followed by a more comfortable six-point success over St Peter’s in round two.

Clann Eireann and Maghery have two points apiece while St Peter’s have lost both games so far but, although their scoring difference is -16, mathematically they can still cause an upset if they can spring a surprise against a Maghery team that finished strongly against Clann Eireann last Sunday.

Clann Eireann will be minus Armagh All-Ireland winner Conor Turbitt for their home game against Madden but his Orchard county colleague could return after missing out with a shoulder injury.

Meanwhile, in the Intermediate championship Group A, round three, Whitecross can finish top of their group if they can beat winless Portadown outfit Tir na nÓg and unbeaten St Paul’s slip up when they visit Shane O’Neill’s.
