DOWN football is going through somewhat of a monopoly in the shape of Kilcoo and their dominance over the championship in recent years.

The Magpies have won the last five championships and would have been going for a baker’s dozen in a row if it hadn’t been for their recurring opponents of Burren who they face in the final again this Sunday.

Owen Roes, who have won the Ulster club title twice in recent years and the All-Ireland title in 2021 will be confident that they can regain their county crown for another year.

The holders, and Down’s most successful club football side, wiped out Mayobridge and Glenn, John Martin’s on the way to the final, having also won against Clonduff and Louhinisland in earlier rounds.

Burren, who have met Kilcoo in two finals since their win in 2018, have never quite managed to get the better of the magpies.

St Mary’s knocked out Carryduff and Bredagh on the way to the final in Pairc Esler, both wins coming by a three-point margin, something that the side would bite your arm off for in today’s Down SFC final.

Burren took a round-one victory against Liatroim before sending Mayobridge into the back-door in round two.
