Vinny Corey has stepped down as Monaghan manager tonight. It’s understood he informed the county board of his decision earlier on Monday night, despite players being keen for him to stay on.

Corey took Monaghan to an All-Ireland semi-final in his first year, where they lost narrowly to Dublin.

This year, the were relegated to Division Two and lost in the first round of the Ulster SFC to Cavan.

The recovered to reach a preliminary quarter-final of the All-Ireland where they lost to the Galway.

Star forward Conor McManus hung up his boots after that defeat while Corey has had to cope without the services of experienced players like Darren Hughes who missed the rest of the Championship after suffering an injury in that defeat to Cavan.
