DAVY Fitzgerald has been linked with taking over as manager of the Antrim hurlers.
The Irish News understands that the Clare native met with Antrim County Board officials at their Dunsilly base to discuss the possibility of succeeding Darren Gleeson as manager of the Glensmen.
Former Laois manager Eddie Brennan, an eight-time All-Ireland-winner with Kilkenny, is also believed to be in the mix while Michael McShane, the man who guided Derry’s Slaughtneil to nine county and four provincial championships, also has an impressive CV that includes a spell as manager of Tyrone.
Clare native Fitzgerald has had involvement with Antrim hurling in the past. The Sixmilebridge clubman has taken coaching at club level and also ran sessions with the Antrim minor side. A charismatic character with a high media profile, ‘Davy Fitz’ was the goalkeeper in Clare’s All-Ireland-winning team in 1995.
When his playing days came to an end, Fitzgerald transferred his infectious passion for the caman code into management. He guided Waterford to the All-Ireland final 2008 and then took the Banner county to Liam MacCarthy Cup glory in 2013. Since then he has inspired Wexford to a Munster title and had a second spell with the Deise which came to an end when he stepped down earlier this month.
After a difficult National League campaign, Antrim bounced back impressively in the Leinster Senior Hurling Championship last season, claiming wins over Wexford and Carlow.
