How the Clare players rated: Tony Kelly steals the All-Ireland final show with moments of brilliance

Banner captain stars as Clare win first title since 2013

Shane O'Donnell
Clare's Shane O'Donnell (seamus loughran)

Eibhear Quilligan: Didn’t have a shot to save apart from Robbie O’Flynn’s extra-time effort that Quilligan would have been disappointed had to have let past him. Puckouts were solid. 7.5

Adam Hogan: Booked in the first half for pulling and dragging Alan Connolly but was brilliant after that, limiting Connolly to a point and snuffing out any danger that threatened the Clare full-back line. 8

Conor Cleary: Looked to be in for an early shower after being shown a first-half yellow card after struggling to contain Brian Hayes. Knuckled down to put in a superbly disciplined display, blotting out Hayes before going off injured in the 71st minute. 7.5

Conor Leen: Extremely lucky to get away with his last-gasp shirt-pull on O’Flynn but it would have been a harsh postscript on an assured performance. 7

Diarmuid Ryan: Nullified Declan Dalton while scoring 0-3 himself. Found Shane Kingston a real handful in extra-time. 8

John Conlon: Steadied after looking all at sea during Cork’s fast start. Anchored the Banner defence stoutly after that. 8

David McInerney: Found Harnedy difficult to deal with and also had plenty to think about when his replacement Robbie O’Flynn came on. 6.5

David Fitzgerald: Scored 0-3 but was wasteful too, hitting wides from poor options and a couple he would expect to score most days. 7

Cathal Malone: Was detailed with keeping Darragh Fitzgibbon quiet and did his job well. 7.5

STARMAN

Tony Kelly: Did donkey work in the first half, foraging deep and working hard. Blew the doors off Croke Park in the second, scoring a remarkable goal and a point to match. Stepped up again in extra-time, scoring two more points in the first half before his remarkable 88th minute point that gave Clare a lead they would never surrender. 8.5

Mark Rodgers: Started inside and hit Clare’s opening point. Moved out the field more often when Peter Duggan went to full-forward and took his goal chance well, cutting inside the Cork cover to fire home. 7.5

Peter Duggan: Didn’t make his usual impact early on but was more effective when moved to full-forward. Won some crucial Clare puckouts and scored a fine sideline cut. 7

Aidan McCarthy: Was excellent in the first half, scoring 1-4, 1-3 of it from play, but faded after the break and was taken off in 55th minute. Came back on for extra-time and nailed two crucial frees. 7.5

Shane O’Donnell: Was at his best in the first half, scoring a couple of points and playing a key role in Clare’s comeback after Cork’s goal. Was quieter in the second half but needed minded the whole time. Had run himself into the ground by the time cramp forced him off in extra-time. 7

David Reidy: Roamed out the field and picked up a couple of points. Substituted near the end of normal time. 6.5

SUBSTITUTES

Ryan Taylor: Came on with 15 minutes left of normal time and scored a point and created another. 7

Ian Galvin: Got Clare up and running in extra-time with an excellent point. 6.5

Aron Shanagher: Won the first ball into him but hit it wide, then threw himself about a bit too much, giving away the two frees in the passage of play that saw Cork level at the end of normal time. 5.5

Darragh Lohan: The manager’s nephew did an excellent job on Hayes after coming on for Cleary. 7

Cian Galvin: On for Ryan in extra-time and shored up the half-back line. 6.5

Shane Meehan: Scored Clare’s 29th and final point. 6.5

Seadna Morey: Steady at the back for the last five minutes as he collected his second All-Ireland medal. 6.5

Robin Mounsey: Not on long enough to be rated.
