CLONDUFF avenged a single-point defeat in last year’s semi-final when they came away from Fontenoy Park with a comfortable victory in Group A of the Down senior camogie championship on Wednesday night.

Liatroim started well and were 0-3 to 0-1 ahead after eight minutes thanks to points each from Aimee McAleenan (free), Dearbhla Magee and Alanna McCrickard.

But the first-half scoring was dominated by Paula O’Hagan, who scored all eight Clonduff points. Only for a brilliant reaction save from Caitriona McCrickard in the 27th minute, she might well have hit the net as well.

O’Hagan continued the scoring in the third quarter with two more points before Fionnuala Carr became the second Clonduff player on the score-card when she put a side-line cut between the posts in the 42nd minute.

Liatroim rallied in the last quarter with three points from Aimee McAleenan followed by a late goal from Dearbhla Magee.

However, player-of-the-match O’Hagan finished the scoring with her 14th point to put her side top of the group.

In the other game, Ballyholland picked up their first win with a 5-16 to 0-9 victory over last year’s intermediate champions Kilcoo.

The Harps led by 2-4 to 0-4 at the break, their goals scored by Karen Maginn and Katie O’Brien. Kilcoo fought hard throughout but further goals from Maginn, Niamh Burns and Emma McIvor gave the score-line a rather one-sided look.

The next round of fixtures will take place on Saturday, September 7 with Liatroim away to Ballycran and Clonduff at home to Ballyholland.

On the same day in Group B there are two further games on the peninsula – Ballygalget v An Ríocht and Portaferry v Mayobridge.

Liatroim D Magee (1-1), A McAleenan (0-5, 0-3 frees), A McCrickard (0-1)

Clonduff P O’Hagan (0-14, 0-12 frees), F Carr (0-3, 0-2 sideline.)
