Walk Description
Dust off your walking boots this spring and take a walk through the spectacular Sperrins following the Craignamaddy Circuit.
The peaceful network of rural roads and gravel paths which make up the Craignamaddy Circuit in the Western Sperrins boast heather clad hills, tranquil valleys and a rich, diverse cultural heritage. The route offers stunning views of the Glenelly and Owenkillew valleys, not to mention a wonderful traverse on the slopes of Vingear Hill and an opportunity to soak up rural traditions in the small villages and hamlets of this beautiful region.
Starting from Barnes car park in Glenelly, the route follows uphill to the top of Barns Gap where panoramic views can be enjoyed of the entire Sperrin Range before contouring Mullaghbolig.
Continue on this track as the trail descends into Owenkillew Valley below Vinegar Hill before following rural roads towards track which contours the heathery dome of Mullaghbane. The route then meanders for approximately 3 miles before turning right on a hill track just past Glentrina Bridge. This track climbs Craignamaddy Hill and opens up magnificent views of the Owenkillew and Glenelly; often regarded as two of the most idyllic valleys in Northern Ireland.
The 0.9 mile descent from the crest of Craignamaddy leads down to Glenelly and the Landahussy Road where you turn right at the marker post. Follow the markers ahead for another 1.6 miles to finish your walk back at Barnes car park.
