Italian Rose Sparking Wine Diamond, £8.99, Lidl

Presented in a striking cut-glass bottle and makes for a great centrepiece at any celebration. Italy seems to be able to produce this sort of sparkling wine easily – light, fresh, off-dry and ever so easy to drink. Light and effervescent, this Italian Rosé offers red berry notes over a delicate base of pears and apples. Perfect with shellfish, desserts or as a sophisticated aperitif. Make sure you put it in the fridge for a few hours though.

Australia always fares well in blind tastings and wine competitions, thanks to their vibrant flavours, and this mega-brand is a go-to label for well-made, fairly-priced wines. In this example there is the concentration and sweetness of blackberries, with jammy blueberry, some spiced oak and juicy acidity on the finish. Gentle oak ageing adds subtle vanilla hints and gives a smooth finish.
