Wine: This week's top tipples

Baden Spätburgunder 2019, Germany £9.99, Lidl

A ruby red Pinot (Spätburgunder is German for Pinot Noir) to pair with a broad range of Christmas flavours including goose. It’s cherry-scented with a core of raspberry fruit, held up by the use of oak, subtle hint of spice and a smooth, silky texture. I’m impressed with the taste... but even more so with the price.

Villa Maria Reserve Sauvignon Blanc, New Zealand, £10 Asda

A wine with the usual aromatics from gooseberry, guava and grapefruit plus a touch of honeydew melon in the mix. There’s a subtle lychee note and fruity sweetness, balanced by fine acidity, the flavours echo on the finish. It would go well with shellfish, smoked salmon and goat’s cheese.

WINE OF THE WEEK

Hommage Du Rhone, Vinsobre, £9, Centra & SuperValu

Vinsobre is another of Chateauneuf Du Pape’s lesser well known neighbours producing fresh wines with a spicy nose of red berries with lots of crunchy black fruit character with the typical Rhone Valley allure.

A good choice for the traditional turkey and ham Christmas dinner.
