Classic Ford Capri 280 is better than money in the bank

A 'GARAGE find' Ford Capri 280 with just 2,960 miles from new sold for £39,938 at the Classic Cars Auctions Christmas sale on Saturday December 10.

Supplied and registered new in 1987 by Soans of Leamington Spa, the 1986 run-out model of Ford's iconic classic was purchased by the vendor last year after being sourced from a large collection of Ford Capris.

While its Brooklands Green paintwork and Raven Black leather interior was described as being in 'time warp condition', this low-mileage 280 will require some recommissioning by its new owner before it hits the road again for the first time in over 30 years.

Other noteworthy sales included a UK-supplied 1973 Jaguar E-Type Series 3 roadster with a manual gearbox and just over 37,000 well documented miles, which went for £81,000, and a 1971 Datsun 240Z 'Works Replica' imported from California in 2011 and converted to International Rally specification by Rally Preparation Services of Witney for the 2012 London to Cape Town Rally which sold for £32,063.

Many other cars performed strongly and smashed their estimates, including a 1975 AC Cobra Replica estimated at £18,000 to £22,000 which sold for £27,255 and a 2007 Mercedes-Benz CLK 63 AMG Cabriolet, estimated at £16,000 and sold for £30,375.

Many 'no reserve' cars also performed well: a 2005 Mini Cooper (R50) in British Racing Green re-worked by Howard Road & Race Car Company sold for £7,312.
