On the Road: A Journey through the Bible for Migrants

MIGRANT: The Bible Society in Northern Ireland is supporting colleagues involved in the refugee crisis as people seek safety in Europe from the horrors they are fleeing in Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan, Iran and elsewhere.

John Doherty, the society's general secretary, says they are offering both practical and spiritual help.

"Our Bible Society colleagues across Europe and the Middle East are responding to these needs first-hand with practical aid packages that provide essentials such as fresh water and hygiene items, and also contain specially chosen Scripture publications," he said.

"At least one Bible Society is distributing On the Road: A Journey through the Bible for Migrants.

"All of its 33 Scripture passages speak directly into a migrant's life and it is available in seven languages."

Mr Doherty said that while "here in Northern Ireland we are largely insulated from what has become one of the tragedies of our time" there were at least two things "which positively impact the lives of people in crisis everywhere".

"The power of prayer that commits people into God's safe-keeping and into the arms of those who would reach out a helping hand to them; and the power of Scripture which speaks in all the languages of those countries worst affected and will provide comfort and reassurance to people who have lost the security of their homes and perhaps been separated from family members," he said.

VOCATIONS: The Armagh Vocations Team is hosting three more of its 'Great People, Great Stories, Come and Listen' events.

The first takes place next Thursday, October 8, at 8pm in Kilsaran Legion of Mary Centre, with Sr Julie McGoldrick and Fr Ryan McAleer among the speakers.

Sr Julie is a Sister of St Clare and currently principal of Sacred Heart Grammar School in Newry, and Fr McAleer was ordained to the priesthood in 2012 for the Archdiocese of Armagh and is curate in Dungannon.

Further events will be held in Armagh on October 15 and Drogheda on November 5.
