Up and at it - what is your morning routine? How has it changed?
I have a five-year-old, so the morning starts when she decides she wants to get up and start asking us questions. She just started school in September, so that's been a big change - I'm at the school gates at 8.45am like a diligent parent, then back home to the computer to start chomping through the inbox.
What might you eat in a typical working day for...Breakfast?
Usually an egg. Our neighbours have loads of chickens, so we get free range on demand.
Lunch?
It depends - if I'm at home, I'll do something quick and simple, a bagel or whatever is kicking around. If I'm on the move, then it's usually an Applegreen somewhere. I could write a book on deli-sandwiches across the country. You'd be shocked at how badly people can make a sandwich.
Evening meal?
We're pretty healthy with regard to our evening meal and have been trying to do a couple veggie dinners a week. After that, it could be anything from the classics like bacon and cabbage to spag bol. My other half is a spectacular cook, so I'm lucky. She's not as lucky, but I'm improving...
Is nutrition important to you?
Not knowingly, but if I eat rubbish for two days straight, then I feel terrible, so we try and keep it pretty balanced.
Have you been able to work from home - if so, how have you found it?
Ah, not really; we did a couple of things remotely, in-between lockdowns. The artists of the world got severely overlooked during the pandemic. It's hard to connect with a remote audience and have any kind of shared experience. All of the admin that goes on behind the scenes, of course, has to continue, but during the pandemic, playing music into the laptop was a dose and we won't miss it.
Weekend treat?
Two-to-eight pints of Guinness, depending on the company.
How do you keep physically and mentally fit?
I try and do four or five workouts per week, simple stuff like 20- or 30-minute HIIT routines or a 5K run. After that, I might walk the dog or take my daughter out for a spin on her scooter. In terms of mental fitness, I have put a time limit on myself for social media, which helps a lot. It's a big vacuous hole of noise and it's hard not to get infuriated at the state of the nation sometimes.
Have you ever been on a diet - if so, how did it go?
No, I've always been able to eat what I want and not worry about weight, which is lucky.
How do you relax?
Once our daughter is asleep, I'll start watching stuff on Netflix that is easy on the head, or else I'll do some gaming. There's a gang of us musician dads who get our kids to bed and then go online and play shooting games together. It's quite tragic, really.
Teetotal or tipple?
Tipple. I honestly don't know how people do teetotal. I mean, each to their own, but I'd crack up.
What book are you currently reading?
I'm always exhausted by the time my head hits the pillow, so I never make it through two pages of a book before I conk out. I love audible, though, having the authors narrate their own words is class. I just finished Creation Stories by Alan McGee and I'm currently listening to Then It Fell Apart by Moby and Windswept & Interesting, Billy Connolly's new one. I love listening to people tell their life story.
Best Netflix?
Chef's Table, Drive To Survive and any music or sporting documentaries.
Most surprising thing you've learned about yourself?
I'm better at parenting than I thought I'd be. I think my daughter likes me, so that's a good start. The journey of self-discovery is ongoing.
What are your goals for 2022?
The pandemic managed to shatter any plans that we made, so I've approached this year with caution, but I want to have a nice summer in our camper van with my wife and daughter.
What time do you get to bed and do you think you get enough sleep?
I have to drag myself away from the tragic gaming dads around 11.30pm and get to bed. It usually is enough sleep, but it depends on my daughter - some days she thinks it's good craic to get up at 5.30am.
What are your memories of school sports - any you would rather forget?
I remember having to wear two rubber verruca socks in Antrim Forum when I was learning how to swim. A dark day.
Biggest gripe?
How long have you got? Americanisms creeping into the Irish vernacular is one. There are so many Irish people speaking with an American twang these days, it's ridiculous. I saw someone on social media this morning saying that people aren't achieving their goals because 'they ain't grinding hard enough'. Grinding? Spare me... I have a two-hour rant about the state of the nation, that's for another time and mostly unprintable.
Stairs or lift?
Stairs usually, unless the lift is there already. Whatever is getting me from A to B quickest.
Any new skills or hobbies?
We converted a van into a camper during lockdown, so my DIY skills have gone up a notch.
What would you like to see change for good when this is all over?
I hope people value the arts more and support their own, otherwise the best musicians in the country will be forced into driving for Amazon.
Has coronavirus changed your attitude towards your own mortality?
I guess it has, but I think parenthood has made me more aware of my mortality. I try to 'mind' myself a bit better, but not too much, like. I enjoy the craic as well; it's all about balance and I'm still trying to figure that out.
