Here are the ways car manufactures get around EU tests

1. Reduce the weight of the vehicle

2. Use special lubricants, not normally available to motorists, to cut friction.

3. Disconnect the alternator, to reduce the additional power drawn from the engine.

4. Adapting driving technique by adjusting braking and acceleration.

5. Running the test at optimal temperature leads to a reduction in fuel consumption.

6. Taping up the gaps in the car's bodywork - between the bonnet and the grille, for example - minimises air resistance.

7. Tweak the brakes by reducing the friction between the pads and discs.

8. Using the highest tyre pressures allowed in the test cuts fuel consumption.

9. Flexibility in the test system allows manufacturers to lower scores by 4 per cent.
