FIAT has added an SUV-themed 'Cross' variant to its Tipo model in a bid to drum up a bit more interest in the family car.

The Tipo Cross rides 7cm taller than the regular car and gains a new grille design, a skid plate, bull bar, extended side skirts and roof bars. Larger tyres are fitted as standard, too.

Elsewhere, the Tipo hatchback and estate have been updated too. All cars get full LED headlights, as well as refreshed bumpers and redesigned grille.

The Tipo also gets Fiat's new 'wordmark' logo.

Inside is a new configurable seven-inch digital cluster behind the steering wheel, while the air conditioning controls have been given chrome and black inserts.

The only engine option now is a 99bhp 1.0-litre turbocharged petrol unit. Fiat claims it can do 51.4mph, with CO2 emissions of between 125g/km and 133g/km.

The hatchback version of the revised Tipo is priced from £17.690, which is a step up from the outgoing car's starting point of under £16k.

Standard equipment includes LED daytime running lights, rear parking sensors, cruise control, lane-keep assist and autonomous emergency braking.

Step up to mid-spec Life trim and, in exchange for £19,690, you get 17-inch alloy wheels, LED headlamps and a touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

The jacked-up Cross model is the range-topper, priced from £21,690.
