Retro Cannonball road run getting set to roll again

THE route for this year's Retro Cannonball road run has just been announced.

The annual two day for-charity convoy of classic sports cars will set off from Wexford County Council County Hall on Friday May 26 at 10am, with drivers set to cross the finish line in Tullamore the following evening.

Sponsored by Tullamore Credit Union, this year's Retro Cannonball will include cars like the Jaguar E-Type, Ferrari 348 GTS, Mercedes-Benz SL, Lancia Beta, BMW 635CSI, Porsche 911, MG Midget, Ford Escort Cosworth, Chevrolet Corvette, VW Beetle, Ford Thunderbird and Mini Cooper.

On day one, the classic run will motor along the 'Copper Coast' to the Haven Hotel in Dunmore East, Waterford, for a lunch stop and then speed on to the Radisson Blu Hotel in Little Island, Cork, for its first overnight stay.

Saturday May 27 will see the cars making their way to Cashel for lunch at the Bru Boru Heritage Centre, before traveling up through the 'Hidden Heartlands' to the finishing line at The Credit Union on Patricks Street in Tullamore at 6pm.

"We are really excited to have Retro Cannonball coming to Tullamore as part of our 60th anniversary celebrations," says Liam O Callaghan, chairman of the Tullamore Credit Union.

"It will be a fun-filled family event, with lots of excitement and spectacle, a great opportunity to come together as a community."

Registration is also now open for the event's supercar-based sister run, Cannonball Ireland, set to take place from September 15 to 17 this year.

The Cannonball events are free for spectators and have already raised almost €1.5m for Irish charities, with this year's runs being staged in aid of The Jack and Jill Children’s Foundation.
