THE imprisonment of six women in Co Antrim over claims of witchcraft is among cases featured in a new Irish language show on how women across the island have historically been condemned as witches.
An Diabhal Inti (The Devil’s in Her), starts on International Women’s Day on March 8 on TG4 and will explore the infamous Islandmagee Witch Trial that occurred in 1710.
Six women were jailed for a year following a trail that began after an 18-year-old woman falsely accused eight others in the area of demonic activity.
The case will feature alongside examinations of cases in which Irish women were executed over witchcraft claims, including Cork's Florence Newton in the 17th century.
The Lagan Media Production series is written and directed by Paula Kehoe, and backed by TG4, BBC Gaeilge, Northern Ireland Screen’s Irish Language Broadcast Fund and the BAI Sound and Vision Fund.
"Set against the backdrop of the great European witch hunts spanning two centuries and reaching across the Atlantic as far as America the series offers a unique lens into the social, political and religious conditions that resulted in one of the greatest ‘otherings’ in human history," an NI Screen spokesperson said.
