Shoppers at one US pet store got more than bargained for when zoo staff stopped off with a camel in tow.

Jeffrey, 11, surprised customers when he was led in by zookeepers who wanted to help him get used to being inside a populated building.

Jenny Ferels, who works for Lewis Farms and Petting Zoo in Michigan, said Jeffrey “loves people”, adding: “He’s a star.”

Shoppers were taken aback by the sight of a camel walking through the shop, she said, adding: “They were quite shocked and overwhelmed, but happy to see him.

“It was the first time a camel has been in there.”

In the video, which was posted on Facebook on Sunday, a voice can be heard saying: “Where’s the camel food at?”

Jeffrey is filmed walking past food, animal baskets and the shop’s grooming parlour.

One of the keepers said: “Take him to the groomer, he could use a little bath and blow-out.”

Jeffrey was being transported to industrial weighing scales by the zookeepers, who decided to stop off at the shop on the way to get him used to being in an indoor environment surrounded by people.

Ms Ferels added: “He did fantastic.”

Jeffrey does have human contact at the zoo, she said, adding: “We throw him a birthday party each year. We sing him happy birthday. He has the first piece of cake.”
