When Apple revealed the new iPad and (PRODUCT)RED version of the iPhone 7 recently, it also announced a new app – Clips – which has now gone live on the App Store.
The free download is part-video editor, part-social media tool.
It enables users to capture and drop in photos and videos that can then be edited with filters, stickers and text before automatically being stitched together with music to create short, shareable videos.

In this age of social media, Clips appears to strike several of the right notes when it comes to providing a new platform for sharing video. Firstly, it has the same interface as the iPhone camera app, so familiarity isn’t an issue. Then there is the Live Titles feature, which adds live subtitles to the bottom of the screen as you speak. It’s not perfect, but it’s impressive technology when it does work and brings a new dimension to your videos.
And finally there’s the ability to add music as a soundbed, but not only that, the track will automatically adjust to the length of your video so you don’t have to worry about editing it down.
Naturally, once you’re happy with your video there’s also all the usual social portals available to share to, but not only that, Apple has added a new smart suggestions feature based on your recent contacts who you may want to send your clip to in a message.
It’s not iMovie – but that is exactly the point. Clips is designed to be a quick-fire video editor for those who want to avoid the time constraints and detail that iMovie offers as an editing suite. Clips, then, is the video app for the Instagram generation.
