Samsung has offered a possible glimpse into the future of screens this week after showing off a stretchable display at a trade show in Los Angeles.
The Korean technology giant unveiled a concept display at the Society for Information Display (SID) in the US that can be stretched and flexed in either direction.
The firm is among several who have been pushing the boundaries of screen technology in recent years, making displays increasingly thinner and more flexible.
Until now, existing flexible displays have only flexed or rolled in a single direction.
Though only a concept, it’s an interesting and potentially exciting idea for the future of screens – for example in a future where smartphone screens could be folded out to tablet size in order to watch video.
It’s a concept some are already toying with.

According to reports in Korea, the new concept screen is based on low temperature polycrystalline silicon (LTPS), which helps deform the pixels in the display in order to stretch them. There’s no word from Samsung on any plans to put the display into production, but it continues a trend of flexible display concepts – which also includes a rollable design shown off by LG at CES two years ago.
