Google Home now has the ability to recognise and differentiate between different users in the UK.

The feature, which allows up to six people to link their Google account to the smart speaker, was first rolled out in the US a few months ago.

But now, with an updated app, Google Home users in the UK should be able to as well.

“When you connect your account on a Google Home, we ask you to say the phrases ‘Ok Google’ and ‘Hey Google’ two times each. Those phrases are then analysed by a neural network, which can detect certain characteristics of a person’s voice,” Google said.

“From that point on, any time you say ‘Ok Google’ or ‘Hey Google’ to your Google Home, the neural network will compare the sound of your voice to its previous analysis so it can understand if it’s you speaking or not.

“This comparison takes place only on your device, in a matter of milliseconds.”

The smart assistant uses that information to allow users to access their own personal playlists, Gmail accounts, calendar and more.

“Your Assistant should be personal to you – and now it is,” Google said.

Google Home went on sale in the UK earlier this year, and will face competition from Apple’s HomePod when that’s released in December.
