A musical about emojis will make its debut in New York next month, and is seeking crowdfunding assistance.

Emojiland is the brainchild of married couple Keith and Laura Nicole Harrison and takes place inside a smartphone. It is not connected to The Emoji Movie.

After a software update introduces new emojis into the land, the balance of the emojis’ fragile ecosystem is tipped toward peril.

According to the Kickstarter raising funds for the musical, characters will include the smiling face, a power-hungry princess and a charming nerd face emoji.

The play took four years to develop, but has finally been selected to play a limited run at the New York Musical Festival.

It premieres at the Acorn Theatre off-broadway on World Emoji Day – July 17 – but you can get a sneak peak of one of the songs here:

The team behind the play is crowdfunding to raise a minimum of 15,000 US dollars (about £11,375) for sets, props, costumes and sounds, up to 100,000 dollars (£75,845) to pay for everything the musical needs including salaries, rehearsal space and insurance.
